Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine erected impressive buildings such as the Schloss Bensberg and led a lavish court which gave work to many artists and artisans, including the court painters Johannes Spilberg, his daughter Adriana, her later husband Eglon van der Neer, Adriaen van der Werff
Jan Frans van Douven, Herman van der Mijn, Jan van Nickelen, his daughter Jacoba Maria van Nickelen, her husband Willem Troost, Anthoni Schoonjans, Rachel Ruisch, Godfried Schalcken, and Jan Weenix with his daughter Maria Weenix. His enormous collection of paintings by Rubens can still be seen in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
Rachel Ruysch was invited to work for the court in Düsseldorf and serve as court painter to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine. She obtained a contract for works painted at home that she periodically brought to Düsseldorf. She continued working for him and his wife from 1708 until the prince's death in 1716.
Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine his widow Anna Maria Luisa was the last scion of the House of Medici. A patron of the arts, she bequeathed the Medicis’ large art collection, including the contents of the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, and the Medicean villas, which she inherited upon the death of her brother Gian Gastone in 1737, and her Palatine treasures to the Tuscan state, on the condition that no part of it could be removed from the capital Florence. Therefore, these treasures are still to be visited in Florence today.

Frederik Ruysch (Den Haag, 23 maart 1638 — Amsterdam, 22 februari 1731) was een Nederlandse anatoom, zoöloog en botanicus die het anatomisch ontleden en prepareren tot wetenschappelijke kunst verhief. Hij ontwikkelde nieuwe conserveringstechnieken en vervaardigde duizenden anatomische preparaten, zodat het menselijke lichaam beter kon worden bestudeerd en belangrijke nieuwe medische kennis werd opgedaan. Ruysch hervormde het onderwijssysteem voor vroedvrouwen in Amsterdam door een examen verplicht te laten stellen. Verder is hij bekend door de ontdekking van kleppen in het lymfevatenstelsel en de arteria centralis oculi de slagader van het oog. Hij was professor anatomie en hoogleraar plantkunde in Amsterdam en een van de belangrijkste anatomen in de 17e en 18e eeuw.
