Andries Veltman (c. 1730–1796): archival sources on his life and death
RESEARCH DOCUMENTS
Summary
A series of archival documents shows that Andries (André) Veltman, born in Amsterdam, married the Hague-born Madelaine Viel in 1762, that the family belonged to the Walloon congregation of The Hague, that he was still living in The Hague on 19 October 1792, and that he had died before 3 August 1799. A Hague burial card records on 5 January 1796 the death of an "Andries Veldman", aged 65, buried in the Noorder Kerkhof. Everything points to the same man, but the card names no wife or profession, which remains a caveat.
1. Marriage and family
On Sunday 21 November 1762 the Walloon congregation of The Hague published the banns of André Veltman, "jeune homme", born in Amsterdam, and Madelaine Viel, "jeune fille", born in The Hague. All three proclamations passed without objection.
Their daughter Louise Nanette was baptised on Sunday afternoon, 23 February 1766, by Rev. de la Fite. The Livre ou Registre des Baptêmes de l'Église Wallonne de La Haye (p. 350) records her as the daughter of André Veltman and Magdelaine Viel, born on the 12th at 2 a.m. and presented by her father. The month follows from the preceding entry ("le 16 Février"). The congregation then met in the Hofkapel on the Binnenhof; the register does not name the building itself.
A second daughter, Marie Madelaine, was 25 in Amsterdam in 1792 and therefore born around 1767.
2. The Viel family
Madelaine Viel died in The Hague; her death record (declared 11 June 1833, no. 662) gives her age as 89, born in The Hague, widow of Andries Veltman and daughter of Jaques Viel. The Walloon church membership register (letter V, dated 1733/1735) lists "Viel, Jean Jaques", without a wife.
3. Veltman's death
Date | Source | Information |
| 19 October 1792 | Amsterdam marriage banns | Marie Madelaine Veltman marries with the consent of her father Andris Veltman, "woont in 's Hagen" (lives in The Hague). |
| 5 January 1796 | Hague burial card | "Veldman, Andries", 65 years, "verval van krachten" (decline of strength), buried Noorder Kerkhof, reported pro Deo, bl. 102. |
| 3 August 1799 | Mutual will, Amsterdam (no. 293, notary Roosendaal) | Madelaine Viel is called "veuve du sieur Andries Veltman". |
| 11 June 1833 | Death record, The Hague | Madelaine Viel dies aged 89. |
An age of 65 puts his birth around 1730, consistent with an Amsterdam-born "jeune homme" of about thirty in 1762. The date on the card is that of registration; the actual death may lie a few days earlier.
4. Caveats
The card reads "Veldman"; the other documents read "Veltman", "Weltman" or "Veltmann". It names no wife and no profession.
Other cards under the same name (1771, 1778) concern children of an "Andries"; whether this is his family has not been investigated.
"Pro Deo aangegeven" means the report was made free of charge; what this says about his means needs further checking.
His profession (builder of a hammer harpsichord) comes from other research, not from these documents.
Veltman died on or shortly before 5 January 1796, aged about 65, very probably in The Hague and buried in the Noorder Kerkhof. His widow outlived him by more than 37 years. Further research: inspect the original card or register, the baptisms of all children, Hague estate and orphan-chamber records of 1796, and his birth or baptism in Amsterdam (c. 1730).
